Despite studying nutrition at A-level my interest in nutrition didn’t truly begin until I was completing my Business Studies degree. I had been suffering with irritable bowel syndrome for several years but it had reached a stage where it had become impossible to live with.
When conventional medicine could only provide me with drugs to help with symptoms, I decided there must be a cause and began to carry out my own research. After changing my diet and using various nutritional supplements the condition disappeared.
I later took the decision to study the subject so that I could help others also recover from health problems and graduated from the Institute for Optimum Nutrition in London (affiliated with Bedfordshire University) following a four year course to achieve a Foundation Degree in Nutritional Therapy.
I also have several years experience working as a Technical Advisor in the nutritional supplements industry.
At present anyone can call themselves a nutritionist, whether they have done a weekend course in nutrition of even if they haven’t! The term nutritionist is not protected by law so it is important to check that the person providing you with advice is suitably qualified.
I am also a full member of BANT (British Association for Applied Nutrition & Nutritional Therapy)
